International company Education First (EF) has been unveiled as the official education services sponsor of Pyeongchang 2018 following a signing ceremony held in South Korean capital Seoul.

EF will become a Tier Two partner of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and will provide a range of educational materials on Olympism to schools at various levels throughout the country.

Students at elementary, middle and high schools will all benefit from the partnership, along with teachers and those studying at university.

“It is significant to have a sponsor for the Education Services category to create a sustainable legacy for the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018,” Pyeongchang 2018 President Cho Yang-ho said.

“Pyeongchang 2018 will work with EF to promote the value of Olympic education and also EF’s brand in Korea.”

The company, set-up in Sweden in 1965, has partnered with Seoul 1988, Beijing 2008, Sochi 2014 and the Rio 2016 Games and is one of the largest educational institutions in the world.

EF has around 500 campuses and offices in 53 countries and also supports higher-education businesses all over the globe.

“We feel great pride and responsibility for being the official sponsor of the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018,” EF senior vice-president Christopher McCormick said.

“We will strive to spread the Olympic Movement to students and teachers in the Republic of Korea and improve their engagement and awareness.”

The development continues the turnaround in fortunes for Pyeongchang 2018 after a shortage of domestic sponsors was identified as a major problem for organisers by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) earlier this year.

In recent months, there has been an improvement, however, with deals having been signed with three of the country's biggest companies in Hyundai, Samsung Group and Korean Air.

Manufacturing giants SK Group, one of South Korea's largest conglomerates, are the most recent addition to the list of domestic sponsors for the event after a deal was signed with Pyeongchang 2018 in September.

Other local sponsors are law firm BKL, telecommunications provider KT, Youngone Outdoor's North Face brand, Pagoda Education Group and Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers, and it is hoped more will be unveiled soon.
