South Korea’s Eunhee Jeon and Singapore’s Cherie Tan topped the respective squad one and squad two singles standings on the opening day of the World Bowling Women’s World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Jeon scored a total of 1,457 points in squad one to finish ahead of compatriot Yeonju Hwang and Germany’s Patricia Luoto on 1,408 and 1,353 respectively.

Tan led a Singapore one-two-three in squad two with her total of 1,395 points beating runner-up Shayna Ng by a margin of 29, and third-placed Hui Fen New by a further seven.

South Korea’s Dawun Jung had to settle for fourth position in squad one with 1,342 points, while the United States’ Liz Johnson scored 1,354 to end up just outside the top three in squad two.

The singles semi-finals involving Jeon, Hwang, Tan and Ng are scheduled to be held on Wednesday (December 9), as well as the final.

Squads one and two in the trios take centre stage tomorrow with the semi-finals and final also set for Wednesday. 

A total of 147 athletes from 30 countries are battling it out for top honours at the Khalifa International Bowling Centre in Zayed Sports City.

This year’s event is the 17th edition of the biennial World Championships, first held in Mexico City in 1963.

As well as the singles and trios, athletes are competing for the doubles, teams, all events and masters events titles.
