Hosts Denmark won a grudge match with local rivals Sweden at the Women's World Handball Championships today as holders Brazil were sent tumbling out.

Stine Jørgensen registered on six occasions in the 26-19 win for the Danes over their near neighbours at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning.

The round of 16 success has booked a quarter final with Romania, who stunned defending champions Brazil with a 25-22 win in Kolding.

Aurelia Brădeanu was on target seven times as the Europeans ensured that there would be a different name on the trophy this year.

Elsewhere, The Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals with a comprehensive win over European rivals Serbia.

After conceding just six goals in the opening period, the Dutch prevailed 36-20.

Lois Abbingh top-scored for The Netherlands with six goals at the Naestved Arena to set-up a clash with either France or Olympic bronze medallists Spain.

“I feel great,” said Dutch centre back Nycke Groot after the game.

“Our defence was so strong and they didn’t expect that so they were seeking a way through.

“Every mistake they made we just punished them with the second phase, we will enjoy tomorrow and enjoy that we won today.

“To our fans watching, we need you to keep watching, we need all of our fans and all of their support."

Back-to-back Olympic champions Norway are also safely through thanks to a 28-22 win over Germany in Frederikshavn.

They are now due to face Montenegro or Angola in the last eight.

The remaining four round of 16 matches are due to take place tomorrow.
