International Ski Federation (FIS) race director Roberto Morsei hailed the "creative" course which will be used at this weekend's slopestyle test events for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

The world's best skiers and snowboarders are due to take part in World Cup competitions at the Bokwang Phoenix Park with qualification and practice runs underway today.

"It is very creative and different from the usual course, at least from the past courses that FIS has been using in the past years," said Morsei, who said athletes had compared the course to "like playing a video game".

"There are a lot of options to choose during the run.

"Athletes are saying that it is even better than expected.

"They are really enjoying and having fun on the course.

 “It really is different.

"Normally kickers are pretty straight, but here we have different types of kickers with different type of angles.

"The rail features are very mixed up and very creative, so you can do at least two or three different tricks on each section.

“You can do a combination of tricks on different rails, which are one after the other.

"In other courses, hit one rail and gap, and other rail gap.

"But here, it is more concentrated and variable.”

South Korea will host the Winter Olympics for the first time when the Games take place in Pyeongchang, with the test events a key date for organisers as they hone their preparations.

Olympic ski slopestyle champion Joss Christensen and his compatriot Jamie Anderson, the women's snowboard slopestyle winner at Sochi 2014, will be among those competing.

The first test event was an Alpine Skiing World Cup at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre on February 8 and 9, a World Cup which received glowing reviews despite fears that the venue would not be ready on time.

Pyeongchang 2018 Coordination Commission chair Gunilla Lindberg said she gave the competition "100 points out of 100" and it is now hoped for similar success at Bokwang.

The skiing slopestyle World Cup are due to take place on Saturday (February 20) with the snowboarders following suit on February 21.

Snowboard-cross and ski-cross test events will also be held at the venue, on February 27 and 28 respectively.
