The Organising Committee for the Muju 2017 World Taekwondo Championships has officially been inaugurated at an assembly in the South Korean city Jeonju.

Song Ha-jin and Lee Yeon-taek have been elected Presidents of the event, scheduled to take place next year from June 24 to 30 in Muju’s dedicated taekwondo facility, the 4,500 capacity Taekwondowon.

Song is the Governor of North Jeolla Province in South Korea’s southwest, where Muju is located.

Lee was the chairman of the Muju 2017 Bid Committee, which won the right to host the biennial event ahead of Samsun in Turkey after a vote at a World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Council meeting held during the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk in Russia.

The assembly in Jeonju also agreed on mascots, a design logo and a slogan for the 2017 World Championships.

The mascots will be "Terri" the tiger and "Arang" the tigress, while the slogan chosen was "One World, One Taekwondo, at Taekwondowon".

"The 2015 World Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia, were the finest the WTF has ever conducted, so Muju has a lot to live up to," said WTF President Chungwon Choue, who attended the assembly.

"But they have the team and the facility in place, so I am confident that 2017 will be even better."

Prior to the 2017 World Championships, a WTF Council meeting is due to take place on June 22, followed by a WTF General Assembly on June 23.

Organisers expect more than 160 nations and 2,000 athletes to participate at the event.

It will be the seventh time South Korea has played host and the first since the 2011 Championships in Gyeongju.

It is estimated that the event will bring an economic value of 20 billion won (£12 million/$17 million/€15 million) to the region.

The previous biggest international sports event Muju had hosted was the Winter Universiade in 1997.

Last August, it staged the second edition of the World Cadet Taekwondo Championships.
