New Taipei City has been announced as the host of the inaugural International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Wheelchair Dance Sport Asian Championships.

Competition is scheduled to take place at the the Sanchong District Complex Gymnasium between November 5 and 6 thisyear. 

The venue has previously staged the New Taipei City Cup Open.

Xavier Gonzalez, the IPC chief executive, claimed the Championships would boost wheelchair dance sport on the continent.

“Since the World Championships were hosted in Tokyo in 2013, we have seen wheelchair dance sport grow around the world, especially in Asia,” he said.

“A number of competitions have been held in the region and athlete numbers have reached a point where we can now have a competitive Championships, which is great news.

“I would like to thank the National Paralympic Committee of Chinese Taipei for their bid, and I have no doubt that they will host a successful event from which we can build in future years.”

Around 60 dancers from seven countries are expected to compete at the Championships, which will bring the 2016 season to a close.

The Championships will feature a full programme of combi, duo and singles dances across standard, Latin American and freestyle events.

“In order to take forward wheelchair dance sport in Asia, we are delighted to be hosting the 2016 IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport Asian Championships, and are looking forward to welcoming teams from across the region to New Taipei City,” said Lai Fou-Hwan, President of the Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee.

“We are particularly pleased to be organising the first Asian Championships, and to be part of this amazing moment in history.”

The new season is due to begin with the Kazakhstan Open in Astana from April 9 to 10.

Finland is scheduled to stage the Suomi Open from April 30 to May 1 before the Mainhatten Cup takes place in Frankfurt between May 28 and 29.

Saint Petersburg is then due to host the Wheelchair Dance Sport World Cup from September 10 to 12.
