World number one Mohamed Elshorbagy of Egypt has broken the record for the highest points average on his way to topping the Professional Squash Association (PSA) men’s rankings for the fourth consecutive month.

The Egyptian won both the Windy City Open in Chicago and the British Open in March and now has a points average of 2,150.000, nearly 300 more than the mark of 1,872.500 set by team-mate and three-time world champion Remy Ashour in April 2013.

Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet also enjoyed a successful month as he clinched the Canary Wharf Classic title to help him to a career-high ranking of number seven in the world.

Egyptian Ali Farag is also in unchartered territory as he occupies 11th place, the highest he has ever achieved.

Elshorbagy has a commanding 500 point lead over nearest challenger Gregory Castagnet of France, while England’s Nick Matthew is currently third.

“It has been a crazy month for me," said Elshorbagy.

"Winning the Windy City Open in Chicago for the first time and then defending the British Open title is amazing.

“It has been a crazy season.

"When I won four World Series titles last year I didn't know if I was going to be able to keep it up but to win five World Series tournaments in a row is a dream and I will keep working as hard as I can to keep it going.”

Elshorbagy’s team-mate Nour El Sherbini has moved to number two in the women’s rankings as her victory at the British Open in Hull, as well as a second-place finish at the Windy City Open, saw her climb three places.

The 20-year-old, one of the standout performers on the women’s tour in 2016, sits 200 points adrift of Britain’s Laura Massaro, who has managed to retain her status as the world’s top-ranked player, on a total of 2,908.824.

Malaysia’s Nicol David, an eight-time world champion, has fallen to her lowest-ever ranking in fifth, behind Frenchwoman Camille Serme and Raneem El Welily of Egypt.
