Iryna Dekha has been named the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (NOCU) athlete of the month for April after winning three gold medals at the European Weightlifting Championships in Forde in Norway.

The 19-year-old claimed the women’s 75 kilograms title with 250kg after winning the snatch with 115kg and the clean and jerk with 135kg.

France’s Gaelle Nayo Katchenko came second with 242kg after taking the runners-up spot in both the snatch and the clean and jerk with 110kg and 132kg respectively.

Natalia Priscepa of Moldova finished third with 240kg having won bronze in the snatch with 110kg and in the clean and jerk with 130kg.

Victory has earned Dekha a first NOCU athlete of the month award, while her mentor Evhen Shylov has been named coach of the month.

Sergiy Semenov won the athlete of the month award for March after clinching bronze in the 10 kilometre sprint at the Biathlon World Championships in Norway’s capital Oslo.

It was the only medal Ukraine won at the Championships.
