France’s Rober Philippe and M. Rebujent Haller received the first gold medals of the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando from Prince Harry after they triumphed in the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge.

The French duo were awarded the victory in the event due to their communication, team-work and strategic planning skills in two time trials.

Aimed at being a test of skill and precision the two participants, who took up roles as driver and navigator, were required to display their cohesion and communication to take home the gold medal.

Estonia and Denmark earned silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the first competitive event of the second edition of the Games.

Prior to presenting the winners medals, Prince Harry joined the Estonian team on the Land Rover course and Denmark on the Jaguar circuit to show his support to the competing nations.

“Today, the Invictus Games were opened by the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, we were delighted to host 11 nations in their first medal opportunity,” said Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive.

“I was honoured to meet with the passionate competitors to hear more about their own individual journey to Invictus Games.

“We are all grateful to Prince Harry for founding and championing this visionary idea of the Games.

“We congratulate him and the organising committee on establishing yet another inspiring Invictus Games.”

The first edition of the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style multi-sport competition for wounded and injured armed forces personnel, were held in London in 2014 following an initiative by Prince Harry.

More than 500 athletes from countries including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and France are taking part in 10 sports in the American city this time around.

The event is scheduled to last until May 12.
