Players from the host country made an encouraging start to the qualifying round of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour Premier Lotto Nigeria Open at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun in Lagos.

Highlights included Azeez Jamiu coming from 2-0 down to beat Russia’s Andrey Bukin 4-3 in an exciting encounter.

“I discovered I was playing his pattern and I decided to change my tactics and this paid off for me," said Jamiu.

"I am not in the competition to add to the number but to aim for the podium.

"Being my first time, I am afraid of any of my opponents as my target is to win the title.

"I am aware of the quality of the players but for me rating does not win title."

Another match that got the home fans cheering was Esther Oribamishe a 15-year-old first year student of Ekiti State University, defeating compatriot Funmi Ajala 3-2 to advance to the next round.
