Austria’s Lorenz Petutschnig and Tobias Winter overturned a first-set deficit against the United States’ Jeremy Casebeer and Sean Rosenthal to advance to the main draw of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour Poreč Major Series event.

The ninth seeds posted a 17-21, 21-18, 15-13 win over their eighth-seeded opponents to earn a spot in Pool C.

It followed a 21-13, 21-16 success against Switzerland’s Quentin Métral and Michiel Zandbergen in the first preliminary round yesterday. 

"We are playing our best right now," said the 23-year-old Petutschning.

"It is a great feeling to qualify for the main draw and play against the best teams in the world.

"The atmosphere was great today and we are really pleased with our successes the past two days."

Among the other pairings progressing to the main draw today were top seeds Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo "Guto" Carvalhaes of Brazil, who beat Austria’s Peter Eglseer and Florian Schnetzer 21-15, 22-24, 15-9.

Second seeds Ricardo Santos and Andre Loyola, also of Brazil, overcame Denmark’s Peter Kildegaard and Anders Hoyer 21-13, 27-29, 15-8, while third seeds Mirco Gerson and Alexei Strasser of Switzerland defeated Lithuania’s Arnas Rumsevicius and Lukas Kazdailis 18-21, 21-18, 16-14.

Men's pool play is due to run from tomorrow until Saturday (July 2) with the semi-finals and medal matches scheduled for Sunday (July 3).

The first of two days of pool play matches in the women’s competition saw Brazilian qualifiers Fernanda and Josemari Alves defeat two teams headed for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The 21st seeds posted triumphs over 12th-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat of the United States - 21-18, 19-21, 15-12 - and fifth-seeded Madelein Meppelink and Marleen Van Iersel of The Netherlands - 16-21, 21-14, 15-12.

Next up for them is a meeting tomorrow with 28th-seeded qualifiers Teresa Mersmann and Isabel Schneider of Germany as they look to secure top spot in Pool E and a first-round bye for elimination matches.

Also causing surprises today were 27th-seeded Vasiliki Arvaniti and Penny Karagkouni of Greece after they came from behind to upset sixth-seeded Australians Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy 9-21, 21-17, 15-11 and then went on to beat 11th-seeded Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré of Switzerland 21-17, 21-17.

Arvaniti and Karagkouni are set to conclude Pool F play against 22nd-seeded qualifiers Maria Antonelli and Liliane Maestrini of Brazil who lost to Forrer and Vergé-Dépré 17-21, 12-21 before defeating Bawden and Clancy 21-16, 21-13.

Defending champions and top seeds Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca improved their season record to 33-5 by defeating Croatia's Samanta Fabris and Sara Radanovic 21-11, 21-17 and Germany's Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany 21-16, 21-17.

The Brazilians are due to finish their Pool A campaign against Canada's Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas, who lost against Holtwick and Semmler 15-21, 22-24 before overcoming Fabris and Radanovic 21-14, 22-24, 15-10.
