Former racer Ingemar Walder has been appointed head coach of the Austrian national Alpine snowboard team after leaving a similar position with the Swiss squad.

Walder, a 38-year-old from Innervillgraten, finished in 28th position at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games before switching to the coaching ranks.

He has spent the last two years spearheading the Swiss team before being replaced by Christian Rufer last month.

“Austria has the biggest potential in Alpine snowboarding," said Walder.

"It's an honour and challenge likewise to work together with such a strong team.

"Our goal is to prepare all athletes the best possible way so they can live up to their potential when it counts.

"This also includes the up-coming worlds in Spain next March which we will attend to bring home some medals.”

The appointment comes amid a wider shake-up of the Austrian coaching staff.

He replaces Bernd Krug, who will now concentrate on the on-course coaching of athletes.

Another former athlete in Anton Unterkofler has also been appointed as technical coach and massage therapist after placing fourth in the 2015 season's finals in Winterberg.

Manuel Kruselburger will complete the quartet of coaches.

Austria has claimed three medals in Alpine snowboard events at the Olympics, including parallel slalom bronze for Benjamin Karl at Sochi 2014.
