The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded exclusive Caribbean broadcast rights for Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 to International Media Content Ltd (IMC).

IMC, the parent company of channel SportsMax and a subsidiary of the Digicel Group, will work with broadcasters across the region and owns the rights for 22 countries and territories.

The firm will use all of Digicel's platforms to deliver both live coverage and highlights of the two Games.

This will be available via free-to-air and cable television, as well as mobile phones, streaming and other digital platforms.

The IOC and IMC will also work together on content for the former's soon-to-be-launched Olympic Channel.

The arrangement continues a tie-up which began in 2009 when IMC secured the rights to the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “We are pleased that we will be working again in the future with IMC in the Caribbean.

"This partnership will ensure fantastic coverage, including on free-to-air television, of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

"We are also excited to be working with IMC on the future development and distribution of the Olympic Channel in the region."

The Caribbean currently boasts arguably the world's most famous Olympic athlete, in Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt.

IOC Member Gerardo Werthein, the delegate IOC Member for broadcast rights in the Americas, said: “IMC was our broadcast partner for the Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010, London in 2012 and Sochi in 2014.

"Their proven ability to share the magic of the Olympic Games in the region means that this new agreement is great news for sports fans in the Caribbean."

The countries and territories the deal covers are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos.

Olly McIntosh, IMC managing director and chief executive for SportsMax said; "We are very fortunate for the IOC to have chosen and entrusted IMC/SportsMax once again to bring this most prized event to audiences across 22 countries, as the Olympic Games sit at the top of the sports pyramid.

"This demonstrates the confidence that the IOC has in the strength of our broadcast and production capabilities, the numerous distribution platforms across TV broadcast, mobile, online and cable TV through Digicel Group - as well as the strong relationships IMC has with regional broadcasters that will allow us to offer the Caribbean unprecedented access to the Olympics and the Olympic Channel."
