Edwin Coratti faces a race against time to have the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Championships after tearing his left Achilles tendon during a training camp for the Italian Alpine team.

The 25-year-old, who has represented his country at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, suffered the injury on the Schnals glaciers after falling during his last run and crashing into the gates.

"I got hit pretty bad by a stubby, and then the accident occurred," said Coratti, who has successfully undergone surgery in Innsbruck in Austria.

Coratti will be out of action for several months, according to the doctors, but he hopes to return early enough to attempt to qualify for the 2017 World Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Sierra Nevada in Spain from March 7 to 19.

"There is a slight chance that I can make it but I won't push it," he said.

"I will focus on my recovery, and then we will see where it takes me."

Coratti claimed the first World Cup win of his career last season, winning the parallel slalom finals in Winterberg in Germany.
