Top seed Feng Tianwei made a convincing start to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Seamaster Women’s World Cup by securing an impressive victory in Philadelphia.

The Singapore star was handed the top seeding for the singles tournament, following the withdrawals of China’s Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen.

Despite missing recent training sessions due to a knee injury, Feng was able to make light work of her first opponent at the tournament against Egypt’s Dina Meshref.

Feng was tested in the first two games of the match but won both, en-route to claiming an 11-9, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5 win.

She will now face the challenge of Germany’s Sabine Winter, who dramatically came from three games down against South Korea’s Yang Haeun to win 10-12, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10, 11-4, 11-7.

There will be an all Japanese quarter-final clash between Miu Hirano and Mima Ito, after they recorded 4-2 wins in their matches today.

The 16-year-old Hirano overcame Romania’s Elizabeta Samara 11-9, 11-4, 3-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, while her compatriot Ito, the most youthful of the teenagers at age 15, defeated Austria’s Sofia Polcanova 8-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8.

Tie Yana emerged triumphant in battle of the two Hong Kong entrants to reach the quarter-final stage.

She defeated her team-mate Jiang Huajun 4-1 to set up a clash with Spain’s Chinese-born player Shen Yanfei, who won 4-2 against Petrissa Solja of Germany.

Home hopes were ended prematurely as Lily Zhang missed out on a quarter-final spot, with the American losing 4-1 to Cheng I-ching.

The Chinese Taipei player will now face Liu Jia of Austria, after the Chinese-born athlete secured a 4-1 victory over Georgina Pota of Hungary.
