Durango in Colorado has been named as host for the opening leg of this season's International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Tour next month.

The American resort will host the opening stop on a five-leg series due to take place on December 16 and 17.

It marks the only change from a provisional World Series calendar unveiled in July.

Beijing,  host city of the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, will now play host for the second event on January 7 and 8 in 2017.

The series is then due to move to Cheongsong in South Korea for a third competition on January 14 and 15.

Saas Fee in Switzerland will form the location for the fourth stop, taking place from January 19 to 21.

Rabenstein in Italy will then host a series finale on January 28 and 29.

A revamped UIAA Ice Climbing World Championships will then be held in the French resort of Champagny-en-Vanoise on February 4 and 5.

A week later, the venue will host the increasingly popular World Youth Championships on February 10 and 11.

The UIAA has promised it will be the "most attractive and spectacular ice climbing competition of the forthcoming season", forming part of the effort to "raise the profile and prestige of the sport".

All of the competitions will be sponsored by UIAA partner, North Face Korea,

Ice climbing, a demonstration sport at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, is hoping to be included on the full Olympic programme at Beijing 2022.

The UIAA is separate to the International Sport Climbing Federation, the body appointed to organise a sport climbing competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The ISCF broke away from the UIAA in 2007.
