Top seeds Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na were surprising first round casualties as mixed doubles competition got underway at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Hong Kong Open.

The duo were convincingly beaten in the Hong Kong Coliseum by the local pairing of Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Sue.

A strong performance saw the home pairing earn a 21-15, 21-14 victory over the highly fancied South Koreans.

Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto will look to take advantage of their shock defeat, as the Indonesian pair eased into the second round.

The second seeds were comfortable 21-15, 21-12 winners against South Korea’s Jae Hwan Kim and Lee So Hee.

England’s Chris and Gabrielle Adcock were among the remaining seeds to progress, with the husband and wife duo beating Egypt’s Hadia Hosny and Abdelrahma Kashkal 21-5, 21-8.

Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir earned a 21-16, 21-11 win over Lin Chia Yu and Wu Ti Jung of Chinese Taipei, but their compatriots Hafiz Faisal and Shela Devi Aulia lost 21-17, 21-13 to China’s Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen.

The Superseries event is set to conclude on Sunday (November 27) with competitors aiming to win record high prize money of $400,000 (£320,000/€376,000).

A host of Olympic champions are set to feature this week, including Spain's Carolina Marin who headlines the women’s singles seedings.

She is due to open her competition with a round one contest against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand tomorrow, with the final round of qualifying having taken place today.

China's Rio 2016 gold medallist Chen Long is the top ranked men’s player, after defending champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia withdrew through injury.
