German city Moenchengladbach is set to host the latest leg of the 2016-17 International Ski Federation (FIS) Big Air World Cup with freeski and snowboard competition scheduled.

Freeski action is due to be held tomorrow night under the lights of the city’s Sparkassenpark, while snowboard is in line to take centre stage on Saturday (December 3).

The two days of competition mark the third Big Air World Cup of the season following those held in Chilean ski resort El Colorado in August and in Milan last month.

They also make up the second leg of the newly-created Super Series, on the back of the opener in Milan.

The Super Series was launched "to present and highlight the extraordinary skills of the world’s best big air athletes in freestyle skiing and snowboard".

After the third leg in Quebec City, scheduled to take place from February 9 to 11, the best male and female free skiers and riders will be crowned champions of the tour.

With the structure of the Super Series contained within the World Cup programme, there are two separate leaders on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Sweden’s Henrik Harlaut and Emma Dahlstrom are currently sitting atop the World Cup standings, while Switzerland’s Kai Mahler and Germany’s Lisa Zimmerman are leading the way in the city-based Super Series with their victories in Milan.

Sixteen-year-old Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland could challenge for a podium place having finished runner-up to Zimmerman in just the second World Cup competition of her young career.

On the men’s side, meanwhile, 19-year-old Norwegian Eirik Sateroy could be in the mix for honours having marked his second World Cup outing by taking third place in Milan.

Other women to look out for include Italy’s Silvia Bertagna and France’s Coline Ballet Baz, while Sweden’s Jesper Tjader, Switzerland’s Jonas Hunziker and Austria’s Luca Tribondeau are all capable of stepping up in men’s competition.

The Big Air World Cup is one of a number of FIS events scheduled for this weekend, with the Norwegian town of Lillehammer set to hold a Cross-Country World Cup and Nordic Combined World Cup from tomorrow until Sunday (December 4).

Lake Louise in Canada is due to host a three-day Alpine Skiing World Cup for women from tomorrow, while an equivalent men’s event is due to be held in Val d'Isere in France.
