Austria's Michael Hayboeck returned to form in style as he secured his first victory of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup season in Engelberg in Switzerland.

The 25-year-old, a team silver medallist at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, produced jumps of 138 and 134 metres on his way to a total of 304.7 points.

Hayboeck's score proved to be enough to beat 17-year-old Slovenian Domen Prevc, who has emerged as a serious contender for the overall World Cup crown with a string of fine displays in the early stages of the campaign.

Prevc recorded efforts of 132m and 137.5m, rewarded with a score of 301.6 points, while Austria's Andreas Kofler completed a successful day for his country by taking third.

Kofler managed to clinch the final spot on the podium with a score of 293.7, achieved thanks to leaps of 128m and 139.5m, the furthest of the competition.

"I was a bit nervous before the second round, I definitely didn't want to lose that lead," Hayboeck said.

"The Swiss soil is obviously good for me.

"Engelberg is a special place for me, I always love coming here.

"I always liked the old hill and now I like the new one even better."

He added: "When we came here I was hoping that the hill didn't change too much.

"Now I won and I know that the new hill suits me as well."

It also proved to be an historic occasion as Slovenians Domen, Peter and Cene Prevc became the first trio of brothers to go against each other in a competitive World Cup.

Peter Prevc had a day to forget, however, as the defending champion and double Olympic medallist crashed for the second time this season and languished down in 26th place.

The result allowed Domen to extend his lead at the top of the leaderboard and he now has 440 points.

Norway's Daniel Andre Tande is second, 82 adrift, with Stefan Kraft a further 87 behind the Slovenian.

A second World Cup competition is scheduled to take place tomorrow.
