POC President Andrzej Kraśnicki and secretary general Adam Krzesiński were joined by Parliamentary and local authorities at the main event of the celebrations, held to honour the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, in the village of Parkowo.

The programme included the finals of the "One World, One Dream" tournaments for different age categories in basketball, football, table tennis and volleyball.

It also featured the "Integration Olympic Run", which celebrated the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace held annually on April 6.

Several Polish Olympians attended the "Barcelona ’92 - Silver Jubilee" Olympic Gala as part of the celebrations, giving them the opportunity to relive their memories of the Games in the Spanish city 25 years ago.

Visitors and participants were able to meet with many of them and also had the chance to view an exhibition entitled "The history of the Olympic Club, Barcelona 1992".

Poland won a total of 19 medals at 1992 Olympics, including three golds, six silvers and 10 bronzes.

The country's gold medals came courtesy of Arkadiusz Skrzypaszek, who won gold in the men’s individual modern pentathlon event and the men’s team competition alongside Dariusz Goździak and Maciej Czyżowicz, and Waldemar Legień, the winner of the men’s middleweight judo event.

Another special commemoration recently held by the POC was that for former President Piotr Nurowski, who was one of 96 people killed in Smolensk in Russia in the 2010 when Polish Air Force Tu-154 crashed on its way to a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre - a mass murder of Poles by the Soviet Union during World War Two.

Kraśnicki and Krzesiński placed a wreath at Nurowski’s grave in the Alley of Merit of the Warsaw Military Cemetery.

Family members and friends of Nurowski were present. 

The European Olympic Committees contributes to Nurowski’s memory with its annual prize for the best young European winter and summer athlete.
