Olympic champion Emese Szász of Hungary will take on Malinka Hoppe Montanaro in the last 64 of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Grand Prix after the Canadian battled through the preliminary rounds in Bogota.

Montanaro will go up against the formidable Hungarian, winner of the épée gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as she overcame South Korean Lim Joo-mi at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento.

The Canadian emerged with a narrow 15-12 triumph to set up a meeting with Szász tomorrow.

Olympic silver medallist Rossella Fiamingo of Italy, seeded second in the women's tournament, has been drawn to face France's Coraline Vitalis.

The French competitor progressed to the main draw of the competition as she ousted Brittany Mark-Larkin of Canada 15-10.

She will now be hoping to cause an upset when she takes to the piste against Fiamingo, who lost out to Szász in the final at Rio 2016.

All of the competition's top 10 seeds were handed byes through to the round of 64 at the event.

Double Olympic champion Tatiana Logunova, part of the Russian squad which won the team titles at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, is due to go up against Switzerland's Angela Krieger.

The Swiss fencer prolonged her stay in the tournament in the Colombian capital by overcoming Mexico's Frida Reynoso 15-9.

Japan's Rie Ohashi booked her spot in the main draw with a commanding 15-8 win against Canada's Vanessa Lacas-Warrick.

The reward for the Japanese is an encounter with South Korea's Choi In-jeong, the fourth seed who claimed Olympic silver in the team event at London 2012.
