A proposal by the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to change the name of Britain's Olympic team will be resisted.

The Northern Irish political party, a right-wing organisation committed to retaining part of the United Kingdom, are set to support a minority Conservative Government after the General Election result on Thursday (June 8) saw the ruling Conservatives lose their overall majority.

The DUP’s election manifesto included a section called "recognition of Northern Ireland", which included getting the Olympic squad to be renamed from Team GB.

"Recognition of Northern Ireland sporting bodies, the Olympic team should be referred to as Team UK and the freedom for athletes to choose their national team," the manifesto stated.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) have claimed the organisation already recognise the contribution of all countries which make up the team and maintain it will remain Team GB.

"The BOA is incredibly proud of its heritage across not just the United Kingdom but all of its dependent territories, and we absolutely recognise the contribution made by all of those countries and territories to both the Olympic Movement and the team’s successes," a BOA spokesperson said.

"This will continue to be the case as we use the mark Team GB in line with the historical recognition of 'GBR' by the IOC."

The DUP also attempted unsuccessfully to change the name of the team before London 2012.

Prior to Rio 2016, the BOA posted an explanation of the Team GB name on their website.

"The British Olympic Association is the National Olympic Committee for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the UK Overseas Territories (including the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar)," the BOA explained.

"As such, neither UK nor GB accurately describes the BOA’s remit nor would they be representative of all the territories that fall under the BOA’s jurisdiction.

"While the BOA has always sought to give recognition to the valuable contribution made by all territories within its jurisdiction and who contribute to our Olympic success, the International Olympic Committee has always recognised the team as GBR since its inception in 1896.

"The BOA, a privately funded organisation, must generate financial support to send any team to an Olympic Games.

"With this is mind, the Team GB trading name and brand was decided to be the most appropriate for the Olympic identification of GBR."
