Japan made an emphatic start to the defence of their World Cup of Softball title with two wins on the opening day of play in Oklahoma City.

In their first match of the tournament Japan took an early lead against Canada through a home run from Eri Yamada, while another single in the first innings put them 2-0 in front.

Four more runs in the second took Japan's lead to 6-0 before a further three across the third and fourth gave them an unassailable lead.

Canada managed to score a single in their fifth innings but the match ended prematurely as Japan went on to record a comfortable 9-1 win.

The reigning champions then claimed a second victory after thrashing Puerto Rico 8-1.

Following a tight opening period, Japan scored five unanswered runs in the third to go 8-1 in front with the match coming to an end following the fourth innings.

The United States, who will be hoping to go one better than their silver medal last year, did not concede a single run on their way to recording two victories today.
