The festivities came after 11 days of sporting action, which saw 273 sets of medals awarded in 21 sports.

Once again there was a carnival style atmosphere inside the stadium with the sold-out crowd treated to a number of cultural performances.

Athletes entered the arena in far less controversial circumstances than the Opening Ceremony, where protesters blocked them outside the stadium.

International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Oleg Matysin took to the stage and praised all of those that took part.

"It is you the athletes that have been the stars of Taipei 2017," the Russian said.

"You have inspired us with your performances.

"There have been world records set and exciting matches.

"As you prepare to go home I know you will take a part of Taipei with you.

"The people in this city will have a special place in your hearts for years to come.

"It has been six years since FISU awarded Taipei this Universiade and, after six years of hard work, Taipei has given many of these athletes the best moments of their lives.

"Let me hereby declare the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade officially closed."

Taiwan vice-president Chen Chien-jen was also in attendance here this evening in the absence of President Tsai Ing-wen.

"On the first evening President Tsai said she hoped the people of Taiwan would put our best foot forward," Chen said.

"Well fellow citizens, we did it.

"After 12 days of intense competition tonight makes the perfect ending to Taipei 2017.

"The people of Taipei were gracious as hosts and enthusiastic supporters to top athletes from around the world.

"Taiwan’s cities are more than capable of hosting major international sports events.

"I want to thank Mayor Ko and the Organising Committee, and all the people that helped make it a success.

"I also want to thank all the police officers that maintained your safety as well as the 18,000 volunteers.

"I want to extend my deepest appreciation to you on behalf of the Government."

As part of the Ceremony, the Italian city of Naples was handed the FISU flag as they prepare to host in 2019.

The 29th edition of the Summer Universiade then came to a close when the cauldron lit here by Chinese Taipei baseball player Chin-Feng Chen was extinguished.

Japan finished top of the medals table with 101, made up of 37 golds, 27 silvers and 37 bronzes.

South Korea finished second on 82 while hosts Chinese Taipei occupied third with 90, but four less golds than the Koreans.
