English newcomer Tom Jarvis produced a shock win against a player formerly ranked in the world's top 10 as qualification action continued at the International Table Tennis Federation Swedish Open in Stockholm.

Jarvis, ranked 348th in the world, had already produced a shock yesterday at the Eriksdalshallen sport complex by defeating 226th ranked home hope, Hampus Soderlund.

He performed even better today against Singapore's Gao Ning, 35, who is currently ranked 46th but has been as high as ninth in 2008.

The 17-year-old Englishman edged the first three games before withstanding a fightback to triumph 13-11, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-3.

"Gao Ning is a well-known player and I knew how he played, he’s good in the rallies so I knew that I had to be safe," Jarvis, who is based in Sweden, said afterwards.

"Today my serve and receive was good and that enabled me to be strong on the first attack.

"I focused on playing backhand to backhand against him."

Sun Mingyang of China, ranked a lowly 220th in the world, was similarly successful in women's singles qualifying.

She accounted for Japan's 38th ranked Saki Shibata 12-10, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 to top her group.

Marie Magot of France also impressed in overcoming a rankings deficit of 185 to beat Japan's world number 41 Maki Shiomi, 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 11-5, 7-11, 14-12.

Top seeded players will enter proceedings when main draw action begins on Thursday (November 16).

China’s Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin are top seeds in the men's singles and will be desperate to avoid a repeat of their shock defeats at last week's German Open.

Fan lost to eventual home winner Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the semi-final while Xu suffered a straight sets quarter-final defeat to Lee Sang-su of South Korea.

In the women’s singles event, China’s reigning world and Olympic champion Ding Ning is the top seed as she aims to win the Swedish Open for the first time in her career and regain first place in the world rankings.
