The Barcelona 1992 side, nicknamed the "Dream Team" and which was the first American team to feature active players from the National Basketball Association (NBA), was given the George M. Steinbrenner III Sport Leadership Award.

The team included 11 future Basketball Hall of Fame players: Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson and John Stockton.

Kwan, the most decorated American figure skater in history, was honoured with the William E. Simon Award, given to an individual or group who has made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

The five-time world champion won a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano and then claimed bronze in Salt Lake City four years later.

Since her retirement in 2006, Kwan has served as a senior adviser and the first American public diplomacy envoy at the US Department of State.

Costas, described as the "voice of the Olympics", received the General Douglas MacArthur Award.

The 65-year-old has won 28 Emmy Awards, the most of any sports broadcaster, and has voiced coverage of the Olympics from Barcelona 1992 to Rio 2016.
