Raubichi in Belarus will host the 2019 International Biathlon Union (IBU) Open European Championships, it has been announced.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Raubichi Olympic Center from February 18 to 24, according to Belarus news agency BelTA.

Raubichi was awarded the Championships by the IBU Executive Committee.

Belarus had previously expressed their intention to host the 2019 edition of the European Championships to the IBU in May of last year.

The 2018 edition of the event began in Ridnaun-Val Ridanna today as Chloe Chevalier of France secured the women's 15 kilometres honours and Austria's Felix Leitner topped the podium in the men's 20km event.

Chevalier overcame one penalty in the first prone stage to seal the gold medal in a time of 46min 32.9sec.

Alexia Runggaldier delivered a medal for host nation Italy as she took silver, 47.7 seconds adrift, while bronze went to Russia's Victoria Slivko.

Both the Italian and the Russian shot clean but were unable to live with Chevalier's speed on the skis.

"After that penalty in the first prone, I relaxed and did not worry about the result," Chevalier said.

"I just enjoyed being out on the tracks on a beautiful sunny day.

"Maybe the key to success is relaxing and not worrying about the result."

Leitner also amassed one penalty during his winning run as he crossed the line in 53:32.8 to claim his first senior medal.

Tomas Krupcik of the Czech Republic, a regular on the IBU World Cup circuit, was second as he was 43 seconds slower than the Austrian.

The bronze medal was clinched by Germany’s Philipp Horn, 56.6 seconds behind Leitner.
