Austria’s Anna Gasser won the first-ever Olympic snowboarding big air gold medal today after coming out on top in the women’s event at Pyeongchang 2018.

The 26-year-old scored 96.00 points with the final run of the day, giving her a combined total of 185.00 from her two best runs at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre.

She snatched the gold medal from the United States' Jamie Anderson, who took silver with 177.25 points.

Gasser became the second Austrian athlete to win a gold medal in snowboard, following in the footsteps of Julia Dujmovits who triumphed in the women’s parallel slalom at Sochi 2014.

"I'm feeling amazing," she said.

"It's been such a good day, everyone doing so well.

"I was like, 'I really have to step up my game'.

"I'm so thankful I landed the trick I had in mind and that it was enough to win the gold today."

Anderson joins Kelly Clark and Shaun White on a record three Olympic medals in snowboard.

She also won gold medals in the women’s slopestyle both at Sochi 2014 and here at Pyeongchang 2018.

"My second medal feels awesome," Anderson, the first woman to win two medals in snowboard at a single Winter Olympics, said.

"With the level of riding, literally it was a 50-50 chance that I was going to put down my more difficult trick.

"So I was just so happy to come here and do what I wanted to do."

New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott claimed the bronze medal with 157.50 points after managing 65.50 for her first run and 92.00 for her second.

The 16-year-old became only the second medallist from New Zealand at the Winter Olympics and the first Alpine skier Annelise Coberger won silver in the women’s slalom at Albertville 1992.

"I'm just happy I put down those first two [runs]," Sadowski Synnott said.

"I'm really proud of the tricks."

The women’s big air final was brought forward to today as high winds are forecast for tomorrow.

Big air is making its Olympic debut at Pyeongchang 2018.

The men’s final is due to be held on Saturday (February 24).
