Jamaica’s enjoyed sprint success on the opening day of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in the Bahamas capital Nassau.

Andre Bent stormed to victory in the men’s under-17 100 metres competition, as he managed a time of 10.68sec.

His team-mate Terrique Stennett claimed the silver medal in 10.70, with Barbados’ Darian Clarke rounding off the podium places in 10.86.

Jamaican success continued as Briana Williams claimed victory in the women’s under-17 100m event, clocking 11.27 in the final.

She was followed across the line by Jaida Knowles of Bahamas and Antigua’s Soniya Jones, who managed times of 11.68 and 11.75 respectively.

Jamaica’s Shantae Foreman achieved a jump of 1.74 metres in the women’s under-17 high jump to emerge as the winner, with Curacao's Vanessa Mercena ending the runner-up on 1.71m.

The podium was completed by M'kayla White, the Bahamas athlete managing a height of 1.65m.

Home success was delivered in the men’s under-20 100m competition, Joel Johnson claiming the gold medal in a time of 10.31.

British Virgin Islands’ Rikkoi Brathwaite and Adrian Curry of Bahamas followed on 10.43 and 10.46.

The women’s title was earned by Jamaica’s Michae Harriott, who achieved a time of 11.39, with her team-mate Ockera Myrie earning silver in 11.46.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Akilah Lewis clinched the bronze medal in 11.51.

There was local success in 400m races, with the women’s under-17 and under-20 titles being earned by Bahamas’ athletes.

Megan Moss won the under-17 in a time of 53.19 and followed across the line by Jamaica’s Daniella Deer and Guyana’s Deshana Skeete, who clocked 53.95 and 54.15.

Doneisha Anderson earned the under-20 for the Bahamas as she crossed the line in a time of 53.58.

Jamaica’s Charokee Young and Janielle Josephs completed the medal positions in times of 53.63 and 54.45 respectively. 

Bahamas are hosting the Games for the eighth time this weekend with 500 athletes from 26 countries competing at the 47th edition of the event.

The CARIFTA Games, open to athletes in under-17 and under-20 categories, are designed to enhance relations between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean.
