Slovenia's Matej Mohoric sprinted to victory on stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia but Esteban Chaves lost a large amount of ground in the overall standings after starting the day in second.

Mohoric, riding for Bahrain-Merida, broke away to the front with Germany's Nico Denz, competing for AG2R La Mondiale, late on in the 239 kilometre stage race from Penne to Gualdo Tadino.

The Slovenian eventually beat the German in a sprint to the line, recording a time of 6 hours 4min 52 sec.

Ireland's Sam Bennett, riding for Bora-Hansgrohe, was 34 seconds behind the leader in third.

The more significant action in the overall tour, however, was further back in the field where Colombian Chaves lost a significant amount of time in the overall standings as he battles for the leader's pink jersey.

The Mitchelton-Scott rider was in second place coming into today's race, just 32 seconds behind British team-mate Simon Yates.

Chaves put in a hardworking display on stage nine on Sunday (May 13) before yesterday’s rest day to put himself into this excellent position, but he paid for it today as he was easily overtaken by a number of riders on the first long climb of the day, meaning he never made it back to the peloton.

This means that Yates is now 41 seconds clear of Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin of The Netherlands, the reigning champion who has taken Chaves' second place, with an overall time of 43:42.38.

Thibaut Pinot of France, who rides for Groupama-FDJ, is sitting a further five seconds back in third.

Tomorrow will see the riders compete in another hilly 156km race from Assisi to Osimo, as the Grand Tour continues.
