Defending champions Austria were among the winners on the opening day of the World Cup of Pool (WCoP) in Shanghai.

The European side impressed in a 7-3 victory over Chile in the Chinese city’s Luwan Arena to ease into the last-16.

They will next face Poland, the runners-up in 2012, who were given a stern examination before defeating Kuwait 7-4.

The Netherlands enjoyed a 7-5 win over Thailand in the other morning match.

Germany laid down a marker later in the day with a 7-0 thrashing of Indonesia.

Scotland also impressed by defeating Canada 7-3.

China "B" were comfortable 7-2 winners over South Africa.

China "A" are not due to open their tournament until Thursday (May 17), when they meet Estonia.

Bringing together the world’s best players in 32 two-man teams, the World Cup of Pool is one of nine-ball’s biggest events with a prize fund of $250,000 (£184,000/€209,000).

Action in Shanghai is due to run until Sunday (May 20), when the semi-finals and final are scheduled to be held.
