Novak Djokovic remains on course for a fifth Rogers Cup title after claiming a straight-sets victory over Peter Polansky in Toronto today.

The Serbian, who opened his campaign with victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Mirza Bašić yesterday, defeated the Canadian wildcard 6-3, 6-4 in 84 minutes to reach the third round of the Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 event.

Djokovic, currently ranked 10th in the world, is playing his first tournament since winning a fourth Wimbledon title last month.

Awaiting him in the third round is Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas, who upset Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem in a 6-3, 7-6 win.

World number one Rafael Nadal is also through to the third round after beating Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3.

Nadal is bidding for a fourth triumph at the event, which he won in 2005, 2008 and 2013.

"I was not at 100 per cent today," the 32-year-old was reported as saying by Sky Sports.

"It's true that I did good work here the last five days, but at the same time it's true that I didn't work very hard at home.

"So the first match is an important victory for me, for my confidence."

Next up for Nadal is due to be Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka after he came from behind to beat Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics 1-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany is also through with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the United States’ Bradley Klahn.

He is joined in the third round by the likes of Russia’s Karen Khachanov, who following a rain delay completed a 6-4, 7-6 victory over last year's US Open semi-finalist Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain.

Third seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina pulled out of the tournament prior to his second-round clash with The Netherlands’ Robin Haase, citing a left wrist injury.

Haase beat Del Potro’s replacement, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, 7-5 6-2.

In the women’s event, being held at the Stade IGA in Montreal, German Angelique Kerber's first match since she won Wimbledon saw her suffer defeat to France's Alizé Cornet.

Cornet, ranked 30 places below world number four Kerber, won 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Women's Tennis Association Premier 5 tournament.

Elsewhere, five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova thrashed fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 6-2, while world number 43 Johanna Konta of Great Britain was leading two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 3-0 when their match was stopped by rain.

Play was also suspended in the match between world number one Simona Halep of Romania and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova is leading 4-3 with the match due to resume tomorrow.

Third-seeded American Sloane Stephens, meanwhile, progressed through to the third round with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Françoise Abanda.
