Colombia's Sara Lopez was the top women's compound qualifier on home soil as the Pan American Archery Championships opened in Medellin.

She scored 701 out of a possible 720 points to lead the way in a tournament which also offers qualification points for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

"It's not bad but I know I can shoot better than that," she said after her display at the Campo tiro Con Arco.

"I'm still happy because I helped my team to have a good qualification and also the mixed team."

In the men's compound, Americans Matt Sullivan and Kris Schaff tied for the lead on 711.

It was Sullivan who got the nod due to a better 10-count.

With the Olympic recurve bow, American Brady Ellison came out on top in the men's event with a score of 692.

"I was a little slow out of the gate, the first couple of ends, I had a lot of control," he said.

"I think I ranked number one which is good, it sets up good for the rest of the week.

"Hopefully I can just continue to maintain the control I had today through the eliminations and team rounds and stuff and hopefully we can win some medals."

Alejandra Valencia of Mexico was the best women's recurve archer, managing 660.

Competition continues tomorrow.
