Lucerne 2021 President Guido Graf has said he has full faith in the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to put on a successful Winter Universiade which will be worthy enough of welcoming the event back to its roots, with two years to go until the 30th edition.

For the 11 days starting on January 21, 2021, the best student athletes will compete in nine disciplines at seven venues in Central Switzerland.

At these venues, LOC members with extensive experience are in charge of the preparations, it is claimed.

"The Local Organising Committee with their expert know-how will ensure top-level competitions," Graf said.

The LOC has grown considerably in the second half of 2018 and early 2019.

More than 60 people are now involved in the project with everyone contributing honorary work while being backed by a professional team in the head office.

"It's great to work with this motivated team," Lucerne 2021 managing director Urs Hunkeler said.

"Moving forward, one important milestone is followed by another, therefore, it was one of the main tasks of the past year to build a strong Organising Committee."

All eyes will be on the Lucerne 2021 team during the Closing Ceremony of this year's Winter Universiade as the Krasnoyarsk 2019 LOC will hand the International University Sports Federation flag over to representatives of Switzerland as the next host.

Switzerland last staged the Winter Universiade in Villars in 1962.

It was the second edition of the event.

Early last year, Lucerne 2021 was boosted by a National Council of Switzerland decision to increase funding for the Winter Universiade.

A vote by the Council was 40-1 in favour of providing additional support to three supporting events in Switzerland in 2020 and 2021.

The Winter Youth Olympic Games will take place in Lausanne during 2020, with the Ice Hockey World Championship also taking place in Lausanne and Zurich in the same year.

The vote rubber-stamped that CHF14 million (£10.9 million/$14 million/€12.4 million) has been committed to organise the Universiade.

Hunkeler claimed the verdict showed the support at national level for the multi-sport event.
