The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) has cancelled its 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM) due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Serbia's capital Belgrade was due to host the gathering on June 13 and 14 but the WDSF has ruled that going ahead is not practical.

In March, the AGM was adjourned due to the ongoing uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, and it has now been called off entirely.

The decision comes with the WDSF facing financial challenges due to coronavirus.

A statement from the governing body said there were "numerous deadlines" required by the WDSF statutes which would not be met before the AGM.

All of the organisation's "limited resources" are now being directed to re-launching competitions once COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, the statement added.

"It was a very disappointing decision to make," said WDSF President Shawn Tay.

"But under the current circumstances the Presidium clearly understood that there was no other option.

"It is much more important to focus all our energies into being ready for the day we can begin our competitions again, which we are optimistic will be sometime this summer."

A date for the 2021 AGM will now be announced "in due course".

Current problems for the WDSF include competition fees, which are their main source of income, grinding to a halt during the pandemic.

"Significant" financial cuts have been necessary with staff accepting a 20 per cent pay reduction.

Workers at the WDSF headquarters in Lausanne are currently working from home on a work-time reduction schedule, with support sought from the Swiss Government.

The World Breaking Championships is among the WDSF events to have been impacted by coronavirus, with the competition postponed from this year to 2021.

The Championships were scheduled to take place in August in Chinese city Nanjing.
