The Federation of International Bandy (FIB) has announced that this year's World Cup tournament has been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Russian city Krasnoyarsk was due to host the event, which is for male club teams, between December 17 and 20.

However, increased restrictions around the world and the rising number of COVID-19 cases has made it impossible.

"The World Cup tournament is cancelled due to the increased coronavirus pandemic in many countries and current travel restrictions," the FIB said.

Swedish teams have won the last four editions of the event, with Bollnäs GIF triumphing last time out in 2019 after a 5-2 victory over Russian side SKA-Neftyanik in the final.

The World Cup is the second major FIB event to be cancelled this year after the Men's World Championship for national sides was also called off.

This was due to be held in Russian city Irkutsk from October 5 to 11.
