Brazil, Poland, Russia, all on six points, plus Japan and France, both on five, are all unbeaten after two matches.

The first game of the day went the distance as France came from two sets to one down to defeat Germany, winning 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 17-15.

Russia claimed their second win of the event in the day’s second match as they overcame Iran 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17.

Japan produced the comeback of the day as they came from two sets down to beat the Netherlands, winning 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-8 to also move to two wins.

Poland claimed their second win of the men’s event with a four set victory over Serbia, winning 26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15.

Brazil also moved to a record of two wins in the last game of the day as they won 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 against the United States.

The day’s other matches were also straight games wins - with Bulgaria beating Australia 25-21, 25-20, 25-20, Slovenia defeating hosts Italy 25-23, 25-19, 25-15 and Canada running out 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 winners against Argentina.

Germany, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Canada, the US and Serbia all now have one win to their name with the Netherlands, Iran, Argentina, Australia and Italy yet to taste success.

The 16-team tournament begins with a round-robin phase where each side will play 15 games, and action is taking place in bubble conditions.

Men’s action is scheduled to take place tomorrow before a three day break to allow the women’s competition to continue.
