Handbike and tricycle racing took centre stage at the Para-cycling Road World Championships in Cascais in Portugal today.

Competing at the former Formula One circuit in Estoril, Paolo Cecchetto of Italy won the men’s H3 time trial in this International Cycling Union (UCI) event, finishing the 25.2 metre course in 37min 59.20sec from Spain’s Luis Miguel Garcia-Marquina Cascallana in 38:35.20 and Germany’s Vico Merklein in 38:51.00.

Jetze Plat of The Netherlands took the men’s H4 time trial title in 35:27.10, with silver going to Thomas Fruhwirth of Austria in 36:02.67 and bronze to his compatriot Alexander Gritsch in 37:01.26.

There was another Dutch triumph in the H5 time trial as Mitch Valize won in 36:01.84 from Loic Vergnaud of France in 36:23.57 and Gary O’Reilly of Ireland in 37:56.74.

Simona Canipari was the winner of the women’s H1 time trial over 16.8kilometres in 1hr 00min 08.69sec.

Angelika Dreock-Kaser of Germany won the women’s H2 title in 33:31.10 ahead of compatriot Jana Majunke, who clocked 33:38.98 and Jill Walsh of the United States who finished in 33:52.96.

In the men’s tricycle competition, Giorgio Farroni of Italy won the T1 time trial over 16.8 kilometres in 31:33.94 from Spain’s Gonzalo Garcia Abella in 32:44.41 and Petr Berger of the Czech Republic who clocked 37:12.24.

The men’s T2 time trial went to Spain’s Joan Reinoso Figuerola in 28:33.12, with silver and bronze going to United States athletes Matthew Rodriguez and Dennis Connors respectively in 29:01.57 and 29:16.69.

Tomorrow and Sunday (July 13) will see the staging of the road races, starting with the tandem through to the handbike categories ahead of Sunday evening’s scheduled closing awards ceremonies.
