Sailor Jonas Warrer and hurdler Sara Petersen have been chosen as Denmark's flagbearers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games here.

The pair will share the duty after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) introduced a new rule encouraging each country to pick one male and one female flagbearer.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who served as an IOC member from 2019 until his resignation in June, met with the Danish team at Experimentarium in Copenhagen and handed them the flag which they will bring to Tokyo.

Warrer won gold in the 49er class at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, alongside Martin Kirketerp.

He competed again with Christian Lübeck at Rio 2016, finishing fourth, and will sail with Jakob Precht Jensen in Tokyo.

Petersen won a silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles at Rio 2016, her second Games after she raced at London 2012.

Crown Prince Frederik was re-elected for eight more years as an IOC member in 2017, but stepped down to focus on his duties in Denmark.

He was part of several IOC Commissions during his time with the body, including the Coordination Commissions for Pyeongchang 2018, the 2024 Games in Paris and the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne.

Denmark won two gold medals at Rio 2016.

Pernille Blume won the women's 50m freestyle in the pool and the men's handball team also topped the podium.
