Raul Criardo has secured the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) World Cup title after winning the men's 42-kilometre race in stage 14 at Zumaia-Flysch in Spain while Charlotte Morgan lived up to expectations to take gold in the women's marathon.

Criardo became the first Spaniard in 23 years to become World Cup champion despite difficult conditions in the Basque Country.

He led from the 17km mark and could not be caught, crossing the line in 4 hours 36 minutes.

It was a good day for Spain as it monopolised the podium with Ismail Razga and Igon Mancisidor claiming silver and bronze, respectively.

In the women's 42km event, Britain's Charlotte Morgan continued her fantastic form this season to win in 5hrs 18mins.

The battle between Morgan and Oihana Kortazar was hotly anticipated prior to the race but the Spaniard finished in 5hrs 26mins as she had to settle for a silver medal while her compatriot Belén Pérez Rivero took bronze.

Kenyan athletes dominated in the 22km races.

Geoffrey Ndungu outpaced Hungary's Sandor Szabo and Amers Aramberri of Spain to secure a first-place finish.

Meanwhile in the women's race, Joyce Njeru and Lucy Murigi ensured a Kenyan one-two while Italy's Alice Gaggi rounded out the top three.
