Sri Lanka's women's team have clinched the final place at the 2022 Commonwealth Games cricket tournament after beating Bangladesh by 22 runs on the final day of the Qualifier.

Both teams occupied the top two places going into a winner-takes-all clash at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur.

The top two ranked sides at the Qualifier had recorded victories over Scotland, hosts Malaysia and Kenya in their first three matches, with Sri Lanka holding a superior net run rate.

Sri Lanka, eighth in the International Cricket Council's women's Twenty20, opted to bat first having won the toss.

Captain and player of the match Chamari Athapaththu contributed 48 runs to Sri Lanka's tally off 28 balls, with Nilakshi Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani notching 28 and 20 runs respectively to help their team finish their 20 overs on 136-6.

A flurry of 45 runs in the final 35 balls after Harshitha Madavi's run out aided Sri Lanka's cause.

Opener Murshida Khatun scored 36 runs, including a half-century partnership with Fargana Hoque after Shamima Sultana went out for six in the third over.

Hoque was run out for 33, with Bangladesh's hopes of victory taking a further blow when captain Nigar Sultana was caught having made 20.

Chamari took three wickets from 17 balls as Bangladesh scored 114-5.

Sri Lanka booked their place at Birmingham 2022 alongside hosts England, West Indies qualifiers Barbados, and world champions Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan, who were all assured of their berth courtesy of their ICC ranking.

Women's cricket matches at the Games are set to be held under the T20 format at Edgbaston Cricket Ground from July 29 until August 7.

Sri Lanka are due to face England in their Group B opener, before taking on New Zealand and South Africa.

This will be only the sport's second appearance at the Commonwealth Games and its first since Kuala Lumpur 1998.
