The top seed in the women’s singles Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei was defeated on semi-final day of the All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham, England.

Tai, who yesterday knocked out defending women’s champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, was today beaten by An Seyeoung of South Korea, with the fourth seed winning 21-19, 21-13.

Tai will meet Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the final, after the second seed overcame Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei of China 21-11, 21-13.

In the men’s singles competition, top seed and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark booked his place in the final with a 21-13, 21-15 victory against Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Axelsen will face Lakshya Sen of India in the final at the Utilita Arena, after Sen beat the defending champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia, seeded sixth, 21-13, 12-21, 21-19.

In the men’s doubles top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo were eliminated by Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana in an all-Indonesian affair 22-20, 13-21, 21-16.

They will take on compatriots and second seeds Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, who overcame He Ji Ting and Tan Qiang of China 21-16, 14-21, 21-13.

In the women’s doubles, seventh seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan beat Na Eun Jeong and Kim Hye Jeong of South Korea 21-8, 21-12.

The Japanese pair will face Shu Xian Zhang and Yu Zheng of India in the final, after they beat Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pulella of India 21-17, 21-16.

The top four seeds made it through to the semi-final stage of the mixed doubles, with the number one seeded pairing Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand beaten 21-14, 21-15 by Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan.

They will face China’s Yi Lyu Wang and Dong Ping Huang, after they beat compatriots and second seeds Si Wei Zheng and Ya Qiong Huang 21-7, 13-21, 21-13.

All five finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow, with the women’s singles starting proceedings, followed by the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, and the men’s singles to end the tournament.
