Finland’s Team Fintastic Junior retained their World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships crown after topping both events in Innsbruck in Austria.

The group from Helsinki have now won their fifth medal overall in the competition, including three silvers they won between 2013 and 2017.

They had won the last World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships, held at Nottingham in the United Kingdom in 2020, after last year's event at Lyon in France was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are proud to be able to achieve our goal and keeping the title as World Junior Champions," captain Linnea Lehtinen said following their performance at Olympiaworld Innsbruck.

"We went out and had fun and worked as team and it definitely paid off."

The Finnish completed the competition with 205.61 points, while Team Skyliners Junior and debutants Teams Elite Junior, both representing the United States, scored 204.39 and 204.11, respectively, to finish second and third.

Day one of the competition, lacking teams from Russia due to them being banned by the International Skating Union following their country's invasion of Ukraine, saw the short programme end in frenetic fashion due to the Finnish scoring 72.83, which beat Teams Elite Junior’s total of 72.41.

Team Fintastic Junior performed a level four for their move element, the intersection, the synchronised spin, twizzle element, no hold element and the step sequence while skating to various music, including The Mosquito Coast by Antonio Pinto and Glass Onion by The Beatles

They also conducted a level three for the no hold element and the step sequence.

The difference between Team Skyliners Junior and their American counterparts was even more marginal, with the Skyliners Junior missing out on second by just 0.07 points.

The defending champions enjoyed a far more comfortable victory in the free skating on day two.

Neither American team could exceed the Finns performance that tallied up to 132.78 points.

However, Team Skyliners Junior, who scored 132.05 points, succeeded in beating their compatriots by 0.35 points to the tune of Whose Side You Are On, Convergence and Paramount.

They managed to conduct a level four for six elements, including the intersection, pivoting block, and no hold element.

This result elevated the 2019 bronze medallists to second in the standings, matching performance in 2018.

"We did pretty well with our programme this time and it was great that we were able to skate at this competition," skipper Misora Ooka said

"We are really proud of our score, since we improved so much since our last competition."

Isabella Walsh, captain of the Teams Elite Junior, added that she was proud of her team’s debut and that they came together to "make this dream come true".

Two-time champions Team Musketeers Junior ended the competition in fourth with a score of 193.29 points.

Canada’s Team Les Suprêmes Junior, the 2015 bronze medallists, finished one position below after tallying 192.36 points.
