Girmay of Eritrea was the first black African winner of a Grand Tour stage yesterday when he crossed the line first on stage 10, but his celebrations took an unexpected turn when he needed hospital treatment after a prosecco cork hit his left eye on the podium.

Doctor Piet Daneels told Belgian media network Sporza that Girmay sustained "bleeding in the anterior chamber of the eye" which "is not threatening to the eye."

Girmay commented that he is now feeling "OK."

On the road Dainese surprised the competition to achieve his first Grand Tour stage triumph.

The Italian DSM cyclist made a burst around 50 metres from the finish to defeat Colombian Fernando Gaviria and complete the race in 4hrs 19mins 4secs.

Dainese pounced on his memorable moment after swapping roles with teammate Cees Bol during a late part of the race due to the Dutchman feeling unwell.

Simone Consonni of Italy completed the top three as France’s Arnaud Démare and Australia’s Caleb Ewan took fourth and fifth respectively.

"It's not really my home stage, that comes in stage 19," Dainese remarked following the race.

"But it feels pretty amazing to win a stage in the Giro.

"Anywhere would feel amazing, especially being so close to home it's incredible.

"I can't believe it happened.

"This morning the plan was to go for Cees in the sprint but in the last kilometres, we swapped because he wasn't feeling so good.

"Then I was just trying to stay relaxed and following the guys."

He continued: "That shows that we really work as a team."

Spain’s Juan Pedro López of Trek-Segafredo remains 12 seconds in front of Richard Carapaz of Ecuador and Joao Almeida of Portugal in the general classification.

France’s Romain Bardet is fourth at 14 seconds behind, with Australia’s Jai Hindley 20 seconds behind the pink jersey.

Riders are set to take on a 204 kilometres route tomorrow when they travel from Parma to Genoa.
