Registration has opened for the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Oceania Championships, due to take place in Brisbane.

Scheduled for July 8 to 10 at the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre, the two-day tournament is hosted in the 2032 Olympic host city by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation of Australia.

Interested athletes should contact their National Federation for entry before the deadline of June 8.

It is expected to attract 80 athletes from the continent.

IMMAF's members are Australia, New Zealand and French Polynesia.

"On behalf of the board, I am pleased to invite athletes from across Australasia to compete in IMMAF's return Oceania Championships, the first to be closed exclusively to competitors from the continent," said IMMAF President Kerrith Brown.

"The Championships will be IMMAF's first in the region in two years due to heavy local restrictions on sport and travel due to the pandemic.

"IMMAF's return to competition in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and over the past nine months and comeback performances from Oceania teams have shown the hunger of our athletes and federations not to have waned.

"The increased level of competitiveness and skill can be expected to show just as powerfully in Brisbane."

New Zealand will hope for success in the form of Fergus Jenkins, who became the middleweight world champion last year, filling the shoes of Michelle Montague, who recently turned professional.

Erin Carter and Troy Fumo are expected to be the top fighters for the host nation.

Hiro Lemaire secured a super heavyweight gold medal at the 2020 Oceania Championships and will look to do the same again for French Polynesia.

This competition is open to only athletes from Oceania and will allow athletes to accrue points in the World Amateur MMA Rankings, contributing towards the IMMAF World Championships qualification.
