Pichilemu has been added to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games Education Programme as it hosted gymnastics and 3x3 basketball workshops for students of the Colegio Divino Mestro.

Pichilemu joins the districts of Ñuñoa and La Pintana following the educational initiative.

The day started with an introductory module reviewing the legacy that Santiago 2023 is set to leave.

The school is for children who are "at social risk" and it is hoped the event helped them to develop skills such as teamwork, respect, and empathy.

"Being able to see the organisation of Santiago 2023 up close, here in Pichilemu, is really motivating for our students, as this allows them to get closer to sports and experience it in more depth," said teacher José Patricio Reyes.

The session marked the third of six pilots that are due to be implemented by the end of the year, all with the purpose of "leaving a legacy" that lasts beyond the end of the Games.

"Sports help in many aspects, for example, in creating consistency in students so that they not only see sports as something related to health but also as a tool to enforce discipline, perseverance, and be the best at something," said another teacher, Cecilia Lizana.

"We have seen many students with behavioural problems obtain benefits from sports."

Santiago 2023 is set to take place from October 20 to November 5 next year in what is set to be Chile's first time hosting the event.
