A member of the legendary British ice hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is among the new inductees into the sport's Hall of Fame for 2023.

Jimmy Foster is one of nine nominations who will join the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame.

It follows a recommendation from the IIHF Historical Hall of Fame Working Group chaired by the world governing body’s President Luc Tardif.

Foster, who died in 1969 at the age of 64, played in 29 games for Britain at the Olympics and World Championships in the 1930s.

As well as winning the Olympic gold medal, he was a member of the British squad that twice finished runners-up in the World Championships, in 1937 in London and 1938 in Prague.

The three medals at the top level means Foster is the most successful goaltender outside the "top six" ice hockey nations.

He allowed only 22 goals and recorded a combined 16 shutouts, more than any other goaltender in IIHF history.

During the period between 1936 and 1939, no other goaltender played for Britain in IIHF competition, and he lost only five games, three of which were against Canada.

Foster is set to be joined by Sandra Dombrowski, now Frey, who will make history as the first female game official inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.

She founded the women's hockey club BOMO and played for Switzerland at the first, unofficial Women's World Championship in Toronto in 1987, and after retiring as a player she turned to refereeing.

Dombrowski was the first woman to referee a women's World Championship gold-medal game, in Tampere in 1992 when Canada beat the United States 8-0 in the final.

She subsequently held the whistle at the gold games at Lake Placid in 1994 and Canadian city Kitchener in 1997 as well, as Canada again defeated the US in the final.

Dombrowski worked as a referee supervisor for the IIHF and Swiss Ice Hockey Federation watching both men’s and women’s games, was meeting with officials, and giving them feedback and guidance.

In 1998 she also became the first woman in the IIHF Officiating Committee.

Another pioneer of women’s ice hockey is also honoured.

Caroline Ouellette was part of the Canadian teams that won Olympic gold medals at Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014.

She also played in 12 IIHF World Championships finals, winning six gold medals and six silver.

Other Olympic medallists due to join the IIHF Hall of Fame are Henrik Zetteberg, a member of Sweden’s team that won gold at Turin 2006 and silver at Sochi 2014, and Brian Leetch, who played for the US side that won silver at Salt Lake City 2002.

Player nominations are completed by Cristobal Huet, the first French goaltender to play in the National Hockey League, representing a number of clubs, including the Los Angeles Kings.

Other inductees include Kalervo Kummola, President of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association for two decades between 1997 and 2016 and a vice-president of the IIHF from 2003 until 2021.

The list is completed by Viktor Szelig, who played in 17 IIHF World Championships for Hungary, and Kimmo Leinonen, another Finn who was the IIHF’s public relations and marketing director for 12 years until 2007 and who help found the Hall of Fame.

The IIHF Hall of Fame's 2023 Induction Ceremonies is scheduled take place before the medal games of next year's IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship May 28 in Tampere.
