The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics Organising Committee have today signed the first-ever Sports for Nature Framework.

A total of 23 organisations have signed the framework, and by doing so have agreed to adhere to four principles to safeguard nature and contribute to the new global goals for biodiversity.

The four principles are committing to protecting and avoiding damage to important species and habitats, restoring key ecosystems, creating sustainable supply chains and educating and inspiring the sporting community to take action to protect nature.

Speaking at the launch IOC member Tricia Smith said: "The IOC believes everyone has a responsibility to care for the planet.

"As a founding partner of the Sports for Nature Framework, we want to help the sports community minimise any negative impacts on nature and inspire nature-positive action."

Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet added: "Paris 2024 is excited to join this initiative, as we believe sport can and should make a difference.

"Facing today’s challenges, Paris 2024 takes on its responsibilities by massively relying on existing or temporary sports venues to reduce its impacts, by choosing natural settings to avoid soil sealing, and by including extended nature protection principles for all its procurement.

"These and other efforts towards nature protection started back in 2015, in the early conception process for the Paris Games, and are being applied across all our activities through 2024, with a strong legacy mindset."

On the day that the IOC and the Paris 2024 Organising Committees signed the framework, IOC President Thomas Bach participated in a meeting of SOLIDEO, the Olympic Delivery Authority.

The meeting was chaired by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and attended by Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet and Nicolas Ferrand, chief executive of SOLIDEO.

SOLIDEO said that the meeting provided an opportunity to present the milestones reached and the good progress on the sites.
