The Swedes - skipped by four-time defending champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist Edin - did redeem themselves later in the day with a 10-3 victory over Czech Republic.

Against Norway, Edin played a rarely-seen spinning stone to score two and take the game to an extra end before the Norwegians prevailed.

"I will remember that shot for as long as I live," said American 2018 Olympic gold medallist Tyler George.

The Swedish defeat meant Switzerland, skipped by Yannick Schwaller, were able to move to the top of the round-robin standings at TD Place Arena, although they have played a game more.

They claimed a 7-5 victory over New Zealand and beat Turkey 8-2 to sit on a record of eight wins, one defeat.

Sweden and Norway, who also edged past Germany 5-3, are second with both boasting seven wins and one defeat.

New Zealand did record their first win of the campaign after defeating Germany 11-8, but they were still eliminated from play-off contention.

Turkey and South Korea, who lost to hosts Canada 9-4 and then to Scotland 9-3, were also eliminated.

Last year's runners-up Canada were able to beat neighbours United States 9-6 as they completed a perfect day.

Scotland also beat Japan 9-2 as they share fourth place with the home side, with both nations on six wins and two defeats.

Tomorrow's match-ups will be significant for the standings, particularly for fifth-place Scotland, who face second place Norway and fourth place Canada.

The round-robin will end on Saturday (April 7) when the top two will reach the semi-finals.

The next four countries will reach the play-offs to also qualify for the last four.
