Italy's Martina Favaretto has won the International Fencing Federation (FIE) World Cup title in Tbilisi, Georgia.

She beat Germany's Anne Sauer 15-4 in the women's foil final, which she had dominated after beginning with 11 unanswered points to seize the initiative from Sauer.

Favaretto had earlier defeated 2022 world champion Ysaora Thibus of France in the semi-finals.

Thibus claimed bronze alongside 2022 Pan American foil gold medallist Eleanor Harvey of Canada.

It was a second FIE World Cup title for Favaretto this season, who had earlier won in Cairo back in February.

There was disappointment for the United States' Tokyo Olympic champion Lee Kiefer, who was eliminated in the quarter-final stage by Sauer.

However, she Kiefer did join fellow Olympian Jackie Dubrovich, Lauren Scruggs and Maia Weintraub to take team foil honours, beating Italy 45-41.

The Italian team included 2021 Olympic team bronze medallists Martina Batini and Alice Volpi alongside Francesca Palumbo and Favaretto.

Japan took bronze with a 45-40 win over France.

A total of 166 fencers took part in the event but none from Russia or Belarus.
